Congratulations to Svetlana Tyutina!!

Svetlana Tyutina, PhD Candidate was elected to be a member of the MLA Committee on Status of Graduate Students in the Profession. It is a three-year appointment, from 1 July 2012 through 30 June 2015. The committee focuses on issues that affect graduate students in language and literature. CONGRATULATIONS, SVETLANA!

Those who have a history of performing public service-oriented activities in their communities and who demonstrate a desire to continue their civic engagement in the future. There is no GPA or academic major requirement.

Doctoral candidate in the Spanish Graduate Program wins Dissertation Evidence Acquisition Fellow

Diana Grullon was recently awarded the DEA Fellowship beginning in the Summer 2012 term. The Fellowship carries a per term stipend of $8,333, tuition waiver, and health insurance. Diana's Fellowship will support two semesters of fieldwork. Congratulations!!

Congratulations to Renée Silverman, Assistant Professor of Spanish

Renée Silverman, Assistant Professor of Spanish, has received the Honorable Mention in the Northeast Modern Language Association (NeMLA) Annual Book Award competition 2012 for her manuscript, Mapping the Landscape, Remapping the Text: Spanish Poetry from Antonio Machado’s Campos de Castilla to the First Avant-Garde (1909-1925). The award is given in recognition of excellence in an unpublished first book manuscript.

Spanish PhD receives Pablo Ruiz-Orozco and Miguel Angel Quesada Memorial Scholarship

Sara Gonzalez is the recipient of the 2012 Pablo Ruiz-Orozco and Miguel Angel Quesada Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded every year to a Graduate Student of Spanish from the Department of Modern Languages whose selection is based on the writing of an essay. The Pablo Ruiz-Orozco and Miguel Angel Quesada Scholarship was instituted by the Municipio de Ciego de Avila en el Exilio to honor the memory of these two distinguished Cuban professionals.

Dr. Santiago Juan-Navarro receives Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching

Dr. Juan-Navarro, Professor of Spanish, is one out of only six professors university wide to receive the Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching. The award will be presented at the Faculty Convocation Ceremony on Thursday, September 27th at 3:00pm in the Wertheim Performing Arts Center.

As of November 2012, the Department of Modern Languages at FIU will be a testing center for DELE (Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera).

The Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) test is the only official test that Beijing administers through about 40 testing centers in the U.S. each year to adult language learners of Chinese. FIU is one of the testing centers. Benefits of taking HSK includes gauging one's Chinese proficiency at a formal level, as well as qualifying for Confucius Institute Scholarship to study at top Chinese universities for a year (must reach Level 4 or above).
