Spring 2013 Course: Reading & Translating Contemporary Japanese Lit

This course offers students the opportunity to engage with contemporary Japanese literary texts in the original language. The objectives of the course are: reading for nuance and accuracy, understanding grammatical structure, and acquiring significant exposure to contemporary Japanese literature. In the process of reading and analyzing the texts closely, we will do partial translations of selected passages, and examine existing English translations read side-by-side with their Japanese sources. For your final project, you will be given the option of writing a literary analysis paper or doing a translation project, depending on the student's level of Japanese reading fluency. This course requires the completion of JPN 2201 "Intermediate Japanese II" or the permission of the instructor.
