Dr. Renee Silverman was awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities grant for her project “The Popular and the Traditional in Spanish Avant-Garde Poetry (1925-1936).” This award will allow Dr. Silverman to focus on her research project for a whole year during 2014-2015. Kranys Innovation Grant Awarded to Faculty Member!

Melissa Baralt and her colleague Ashley Darcy-Mahoney have been selected at the recipients of the Kranys Innovation Grant ($100,000). This research project, titled "Bilingualism and the relationship to Cognitive and Executive Development in Preterm Infants" will be carried out at FIU and at Baptist Children's Hospital. Bringing together neonatology and linguistics, Dr. Baralt and Dr. Darcy-Mahoney seek to explore whether bilingualism can be beneficial for children born premature.

FIU has been announced as the 2014 award winner for the Promotion of Portuguese Language and Brazilian Culture in the United States by the American Organization of Teachers of Portuguese (AOTP) and Press Awards. This is the 3rd time that FIU has won this prestigious recognition. Jose Villar, Ph.D. Student, Awarded Writer's Residency at the Betsy Hotel, South Beach

Modern Languages is proud of its colleague, Dr. Erik Camayd, who was selected by Univision to do the Spanish interpretation of President Obama's speech on immigration. The speech was broadcasted in Spanish during the Latin Grammys in Las Vegas and viewed by 4.8 million.
