At the turn of the 21st century, the closure of most of Cuba's sugarcane mills created two critical needs. First, the loss of these cultural referents produced a void that demanded a representational space. Second, this harrowing experience established the need to rescue the role that sugar had played in Cuba's history, identity, and culture. The book Azúcar agridulce responds to these needs by examining various works that were produced to Cuba's sugar debacle.
