“Costumbrismo” was the literary movement which in the l9th century, in Spain as well as in Latin America focused its thematic interest in the descriptions of the customs of everyday life. Many Peruvian writers continued this tendency: Felipe Pardo y Aliaga used the decription of customs in order to criticize society, Ricardo Palma used it to amuse us and Abelardo Gamarra used realistic techniques to present what are basically costumbrista sketches.
