Admission Requirements

Combined B.A./M.A. in Spanish Degree Pathway

  • Current enrollment in the B.A. in Spanish at FIU.

  • Current GPA must be 3.5 or higher.

  • You must have completed at least 75 and no more than 90 credits in a bachelor’s degree program at FIU and meet the admissions criteria for the graduate degree program to which you are applying. The application must be submitted before starting the last 30 credits of your Bachelor’s degree program.

Application: submit your application through MyFIU by navigating to the Admissions Tile on the student dashboard. Select your Accelerated Bachelor’s/Master’s Degree Pathway of interest, while also indicating your expected graduation term and desired start term for the program.

The items listed below MUST be submitted to the Office of Graduate Admissions:

  • Two letters of recommendation from professors in the Department of Modern Languages

  • A research paper on literary analysis in Spanish. The paper must follow the MLA style and must include an original argument with an explanation of the text (min. 7 pages not including references)

  • A resume

  • A letter of intent to pursue graduate studies

  • Approval from the Graduate Admissions Committee. Admission to the Combined BA-MA is competitive and meeting the minimum GPA requirements does not guarantee entrance into the program. The Graduate Admissions Committee will evaluate carefully all application materials and will make a decision based on the potential of the student to finish graduate work successfully. Special attention will be given to the quality of the writing sample

Please note: If admitted to the combined program, you are expected to complete the bachelor’s degree by the end of the term indicated on the application and complete the master’s degree requirements within one year of completing the bachelor’s degree. Only 5000 level or higher courses and no more than 9 credits may be applied to both degree programs.

Admission Requirements M.A. in Spanish

To be admitted into the Master’s degree program, a student must:

  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish from an accredited university or college. Special cases, such as holders of a degree in a related field, will be evaluated individually by the Graduate Committee.

  • Have attained a minimum 3.0 grade point average, during the last two years of her/his undergraduate program as determined by the FIU Graduate Admissions Office.

  • Demonstrate the ability to speak, understand, read, and write in Spanish with native or near-native proficiency. Applicants from non-English speaking countries, including internationally educated American students, must demonstrate excellent proficiency in English.  Applicants that attended undergraduate institutions that do not teach in English must also meet this requirement, even if the institution is located within the United States.  FIU only accepts official test scores or official documentation sent directly from the testing agency or organization to meet these requirements:

    • TOEFL iBT/PBT: 80/550
    • IELTS: 6.5
    • Duolingo English Test: 110

The items listed below MUST be submitted via your application portal. All items are sent to the Office of Graduate Admissions.

  • Two letters of recommendation from former professors in the format required by the Graduate Admissions Committee

  • A resume or CV

  • A statement of purpose in English, addressing the candidate’s goals and objectives in pursuing graduate studies in Spanish

  • A research paper on literary analysis in Spanish. The paper must follow the MLA style and must include an original argument with an explanation of the text (min. 7 pages not including bibliography)

  • Official transcripts

  • Online application ($30 fee)

Please note: Admission for the MA is done only for the Fall term, all application materials must be received by the Department of Modern Languages no later than March 15th for Fall entry.

Admission Requirements Ph.D. in Spanish

To be admitted to the doctoral program, a student must:


  • Hold a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from an accredited college or university. Special cases, such as holders of a degree in a related field, will be evaluated individually by the department.

  • Demonstrate the ability to speak, understand, read, and write in Spanish with native or near-native proficiency. Demonstrate the ability to speak and read in English with excellent proficiency. Applicants from non-English speaking countries, including internationally educated American students, must demonstrate proficiency in English. FIU only accepts official test scores or official documentation sent directly from the testing agency or organization to meet these requirements:

    • TOEFL iBT/PBT: 80/550
    • IELTS: 6.5
    • Duolingo English Test: 110

  • Have attained a minimum 3.0 grade point average ("B" average) during the last two years of her/his undergraduate program as determined by the FIU Graduate Admissions Office. Applicants with a Master’s degree are required to have a graduate GPA of 3.5 in all graduate courses.

  • Complete the online graduate admission application and submit the following documentation: (a) two letters of recommendation from former professors, employers, and/or other, (b) a resume or curriculum vitae, (c) a statement of purpose in English, addressing the candidate’s goals and objectives in pursuing a PhD in Spanish degree, (d) a writing sample in Spanish, preferably a term paper or thesis, of analytical nature on a literary subject.

  • Receive approval from the departmental Graduate Admissions Committee.
Admission is competitive, and meeting all minimum requirements does not guarantee automatic entrance to the program.

A writing sample in Spanish (i.e. a term paper or thesis) of analytical nature, on a literary subject. The paper must follow the MLA style and must include an original argument with an explanation of the text (min. 15 pages not including bibliography)

  • Official transcripts

  • Online application ($30 fee)

Transfer Credits

Students holding Master of Arts in Spanish or Hispanic Studies degree will be considered for admission and some, or all, of their graduate credits may be counted toward the doctoral degree after being evaluated and approved by the Graduate Studies Committee. Students will be able to transfer a maximum of 36 graduate credits from an earned graduate degree.

Steps to Apply

Please note: Admission for the PhD is done only for the Fall term, all application materials must be received by the Department of Modern Languages no later than February 15th. Deadlines to apply if seeking assistantship: December 15th.

Applications are referred to the department once they have been processed (all required materials sent).
