Admission Requirements Combined B.A./M.A. in Spanish Degree Pathway

  • Current enrollment in the B.A. in Spanish at FIU.

  • Current GPA must be 3.5 or higher.

  • You must have completed at least 75 and no more than 90 credits in a bachelor’s degree program at FIU and meet the admissions criteria for the graduate degree program to which you are applying. The application must be submitted before starting the last 30 credits of your Bachelor’s degree program.

Application: submit your application through MyFIU by navigating to the Admissions Tile on the student dashboard. Select your Accelerated Bachelor’s/Master’s Degree Pathway of interest, while also indicating your expected graduation term and desired start term for the program.

The items listed below MUST be submitted to FIU Graduate Admissions office (gradadm@fiu.edu):

  • Two letters of recommendation from professors in the Department of Modern Languages

  • A research paper on literary analysis in Spanish. The paper must follow the MLA style and must include an original argument with an explanation of the text (min. 7 pages not including references)

  • A resume

  • A letter of intent to pursue graduate studies

  • Approval of the Spanish Graduate Committee. Admission to the Combined BA-MA is competitive and meeting the minimum GPA requirements does not guarantee entrance into the program. The Spanish Graduate Committee will evaluate carefully all application materials and will make a decision based on the potential of the student to finish graduate work successfully. Special attention will be given to the quality of the writing sample

Please note: If admitted to the combined program, you are expected to complete the bachelor’s degree by the end of the term indicated on the application and complete the master’s degree requirements within one year of completing the bachelor’s degree. Only 5000 level or higher courses and no more than 9 credits may be applied to both degree programs.

Admission Requirements M.A. in Spanish

To be admitted into the Master’s degree program, a student must:

  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish from an accredited university or college. Special cases, such as holders of a degree in a related field, will be evaluated individually by the Graduate Committee.

  • Have attained a minimum 3.0 grade point average, during the last two years of her/his undergraduate program as determined by the FIU Graduate Admissions Office.

  • Demonstrate the ability to speak and to write Spanish with near-native fluency. Demonstrate the ability to read English with excellent proficiency. An examination may be necessary. Contact the Director of the Spanish Graduate Program, Dr. Maida Watson (watsonm@fiu.edu). The Graduate Committee might require some students to complete certain course work in Spanish and Spanish-American Literature before beginning graduate study.

The items listed below MUST be submitted to FIU Graduate Admissions office:

  • Two letters of recommendation from former professors in the format required by the Graduate Studies Committee

  • A resume or CV

  • A statement of purpose in English, addressing the candidate’s goals and objectives in pursuing graduate studies in Spanish

  • A research paper on literary analysis in Spanish. The paper must follow the MLA style and must include an original argument with an explanation of the text (min. 7 pages not including bibliography)

  • Official transcripts

  • Online application ($30 fee)

  • International students must demonstrate native or near-native proficiency in Spanish and advanced proficiency in English. International graduate student applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit a score for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). A total score of 80 on the iBT TOEFL or 6.5 overall on the IELTS is required. The official TOEFL score must be sent directly by Educational Testing Service (ETS). FIU’s university code is: 5206.

  • A 60-second video submission, in Spanish, where you introduce yourself and explain why you want to pursue a graduate degree. Creativity is welcome, but no more than 60 seconds!

Steps to Apply

Please note: Admission for the MA is done only for the Fall and Spring terms, all application materials must be received by the Department of Modern Languages no later than April 1st for Fall entry and October 1st for Spring entry.

Admission Requirements Ph.D. in Spanish

To be admitted to the doctoral program, a student must:

  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish from an accredited college or university. Special cases, such as holders of a degree in a related field, will be evaluated individually by the Department.

  • Have attained a minimum 3.0 GPA during the last two years of her/his undergraduate program as determined by the FIU Graduate Admissions Office. Applicants with Master’s degrees are required to have a graduate GPA of 3.5.

  • Receive approval of the departmental Graduate Studies Committee. Admission is competitive, and meeting all minimum requirements does not guarantee automatic entrance to the program. The Spanish Graduate Committee will evaluate carefully all application materials and will make a decision based on the potential of the students to finish graduate work successfully. Special attention will be given to the quality of the writing sample.

The items listed below MUST be submitted to FIU Graduate Admissions office:

  • Recent GRE scores
  • Two letters of recommendation from former professors, employers, or other

  • A resume or CV

  • A statement of purpose in English, addressing the candidate’s goals and objectives in pursuing a doctorate in Spanish. A writing sample in Spanish (i.e. a term paper or thesis) of analytical nature, on a literary subject. The paper must follow the MLA style and must include an original argument with an explanation of the text (min. 15 pages not including bibliography)

  • Official transcripts

  • Online application ($30 fee) 
  • (Optional) A letter requesting a possible Teaching Assistantship from the department

  • A 60-second video submission, in Spanish, where you introduce yourself and explain why you want to pursue a graduate degree. Creativity is welcome, but no more than 60 seconds!
  • International students must demonstrate native or near-native proficiency in Spanish and advanced proficiency in English.
