Dual Language
The Dual Language Major opens up a flexible curriculum for students who want to major in world languages, allowing them to build a strong foundation in two languages and a comprehensive knowledge of cultural traditions associated with the languages of specialization.
Spanish
With more than 400 million speakers, Spanish is one of the most important languages in our globalized world. Spanish is the official language in 21 countries and more than 45 million speak it in the United States. Apart from its demographic importance, Spanish is also important because of its cultural and literary influence.
French & Francophone Studies
French is spoken on five continents by over 300 million speakers, and is classified as the fifth language in the world when including second language speakers. French is also cited as the language most often required or requested for international jobs by the US State Department and, according to the OIF, French is the fourth most important language of the Internet.
Portuguese & Lusophone Studies
The Department of Modern Languages offers a Major (GLCL) in Portuguese and Brazilian/Lusophone Studies. This program takes a multifaceted approach, highlighting the Portuguese language in its diverse expressions across Africa, Asia, Portugal, and Brazil. While emphasizing Brazilian Portuguese, it explores the language through cultural, professional, and linguistic perspectives, equipping students with the skills to engage meaningfully with the global Portuguese-speaking diaspora.
