About Us

Welcome to the Department of Modern Languages at Florida International University!

The Department of Modern Languages offers multiple opportunities for undergraduate and graduate study in language, culture, and literature. From language classes in Arabic, German, to culture classes in Chinese, Haitian Creole, Italian, and Japanese; to degree programs including a Bachelor of Arts in Global Languages, Cultures, and Literatures, Master of Arts in Spanish, and Doctor of Philosophy in Spanish; the Department of Modern Languages prepares students for a variety of educational and future career opportunities.

In addition to the full degrees, Certificates are available to both traditional and non-degree-seeking students in Translation Studies, Legal Translation and Court Interpreting, French Language and Culture, Certificate in Spanish Language, Portuguese Language and Brazilian Culture Studies, Italian Language and Culture, and German Language and Culture. Students also have the option to obtain a Minor in French, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, or Spanish.

Graduate and advanced undergraduate courses reflect the variety of the faculty's research interests, from second language acquisition to historical linguistics; from the traditional, historically based divisions of literature and culture to the study of related fields and modalities of interpretation – from stylistics and traditional philology to cultural studies, post-structuralism, new historicism, post-colonial studies, and comparative literature. The curriculum also emphasizes Language for Specific Purposes and Professions, preparing students to apply their linguistic knowledge in areas such as diplomacy, sustainability, business, law, technology, and the arts. We encourage independent and innovative thinking and research at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
