Maria Sol Echarren
Dr. María Sol Echarren is Visiting Assistant Teaching Professor of Spanish and Graduate Program Director of the Master of Arts in Spanish at the Department of Modern Languages at FIU. She earned her Ph.D. in Spanish from FIU in 2022, with a dissertation titled “Imagining Costumbrismo: Connecting Image and Text in Nineteenth-Century Colombian Cuadros de Costumbres.” Dr. Echarren also holds an MA in Spanish from FIU and a BA in English from Palm Beach Atlantic University, where she received the Women of Distinction Award.

Dr. Echarren’s teaching emphasizes task-based, student-centered methodologies that promote communicative competence, intercultural awareness, and critical thinking. She has taught various undergraduate courses at both PBA and FIU, including Spanish for heritage and non-heritage speakers, intermediate and advanced grammar, and Spanish for specific purposes tailored for business, pharmacy, and health professionals. Additionally, she incorporates digital tools and experiential learning into specialized literature seminars related to her doctoral studies, enhancing student engagement across in-person, hybrid, and online learning modalities.

Furthermore, Dr. Echarren is dedicated to innovative pedagogy and academic leadership. Her professional contributions include administrative roles in academic program management and curriculum development support for the Green School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) Curriculum Committee. She has served as Managing Editor of Spanish and Portuguese Review, Co-Editor of Japan Studies Review, and most recently, as a reviewer for Estudios de Literatura Colombiana. Dr. Echarren has held leadership positions, including Chair of the MLA Elections Committee, and has been recognized for her service and academic excellence at FIU.
