FIU in Angers: French Language and Culture
June 29-July 25, 2026
FIU in Angers-France is a language immersion program which allows students to study French language and culture intensively for four weeks. The program takes place in Angers, a picturesque city rich in medieval history, and is open to students with various levels of proficiency in French. Participants enroll in 6 credit hours encompassing French conversation, grammar, writing, and culture. While in Angers, students take daily French classes. In addition to classroom instruction, students participate in weekend excursions to notable Western France sites, such as Mont Saint Michel, Saint Malô, Châteaux de la Loire, and the Normandy Invasion Beaches.
LOCATION DESCRIPTION
Angers is situated between Paris (1 hour 40 minutes by TGV) and the Atlantic Ocean. It is located in the Loire Valley, a region famous for its history, gardens, tapestries and climate (la douceur angevine). This modern metropolitan area has about 395,000 inhabitants and the people are noted for their friendliness (l’acceuil). Nevertheless, the château and cobblestone streets are constant reminders that Angers was once an old medieval town and one of the intellectual centers of medieval Europe. Angers also counts many cultural venues and activities (museums, cinemas, open-air concerts, markets, etc.) in an environment rich in greenery and boasting an extensive public transportation network and bicycle paths.
HOUSING
During the program students live with French host families—a setting which gives them the opportunity to experience the French way of life more closely, immerse themselves in the local culture and speak French beyond the classroom from morning to evening. Additionally, the homestay accommodation includes all breakfasts and five dinners per week with the host family.
