FIU Passport to Italy: The Marvels of Sicily

The Marvels of Sicily is an immersive study abroad program that introduces students to Italian language and Sicilian culture through intensive coursework and experiential learning in Palermo. Students will develop foundational to intermediate proficiency in Italian while exploring the island’s rich history, art, cuisine, and traditions. Palermo serves as the classroom, offering direct engagement with local communities, cultural institutions, and historical landmarks. During the weekends there will be field trips in Siracusa, Trapani, Noto, Ortigia, and Cefalu.
LOCATION DESCRIPTION
Palermo boasts thousands of years of history, with a rich legacy of ancient Greek, Roman, Arab, Norman, and Spanish influences visible in its architecture and culture. As a capital city, Palermo is a vibrant cultural center with bustling markets, ancient theaters, and stunning historical sites making it a living museum. Located on the island of Sicily, students have access to beautiful Mediterranean beaches, dramatic coastlines, and nearby volcanic islands offering incredible natural beauty and diverse outdoor activities.
HOUSING
During the program students will share double rooms in a 3 stars hotel situated in the historic city center of Palermo. Breakfast is included.

Students register for a total of 3 credits:
- FOL 3930 - Special Topics (3 credits)
PROGRAM COST
The price per student is $3234.76 and includes: accommodation in double occupancy in a three-star hotel with breakfast; field trip to Cefalu’ (full day); field trip to Siracusa, Noto, and Ortigia ( 2 days – hotel out of town included); field trip to Trapani, Erice, and Marsala (2 days- hotel out of town included); guided walking tour of Palermo; guided tour of Ziza castle; visit to Museo dei pupi + show; goodbye dinner; classroom material; pre-departure and in-country orientation sessions; and International Health Insurance. The program cost does not include the non-refundable Study Abroad Fee ($195), FIU tuition for three academic credits, travel between USA and Palermo Italy, and most meals.
