Degree Requirements (36 credit hours)

Common Core Courses (9 credit hours)

  • FOL 3881 Languages and Technology
  • LIN 3010 General Linguistics OR SPN 3733 Introduction to Spanish Linguistics
  • Language Area Culture Course

Major Required Courses (27 credit hours)

  • Lower Division Prerequisite: Must demonstrate proficiency by testing or completion of intermediate level of French.
  • Upper Division Requirements: A minimum of 6 credit hours in the target language must be at the 4000 level.

Major Core courses (12 credits)

  • FRE 3420: Review Grammar/Writing I
  • FRE 3421: Review Grammar/Writing II
  • FREW 3780: French Phonetics
  • FRW 3101: Introduction to Francophone Literature and Cultural Studies

Breadth Courses/Francophone Cultural Studies (9 credits)
Select three courses out of the following list:

  • FRW Literature courses (e.g.: FRW 3280, 3300, 3370, 4123, 4281, 4583, 4751)
  • FRE Civilization & Culture courses (FRE 3500, 3504, 4501)
  • FRE Cinema courses (FRE 4390 and FRE 4391)
  • Haitian Language and Culture (HAI 3500)
  • FRE linguistics courses (FRE 4503, 4791, 4800, 4840, 4841, 4850)

Advanced Literature (3 credits)
Select one course out of the following:

  • FRW Literature courses (e.g.: FRW 3280, 3300, 3370, 4123, 4281, 4583, 4751)

Major Elective (3 credits)

  • Any FRE or FRW course at the 3000 or 4000 level
  • Course relevant to the field of French and Francophone Studies, offered outside the Department, with permission of the Director of French and Francophone Studies
